Polybutylene Terephthalate (PBT) is a high-performance crystalline engineering thermoplastic valued for its unique combination of properties. Its key characteristics include very low moisture absorption, which contributes to exceptional dimensional stability in varying humidity conditions. It exhibits excellent thermal and color stability, maintaining its properties and appearance at elevated temperatures. PBT offers high stiffness, hardness, and good mechanical strength, coupled with notable wear resistance and a low friction coefficient. It demonstrates good resistance to creep and fatigue, alongside reliable electrical insulation properties that remain stable in moist environments. PBT also possesses very good chemical resistance and can be formulated with excellent flame retardancy without halogen additives. From a manufacturing perspective, it features outstanding flow characteristics during molding, allowing for easy processing and very good surface finish on final parts. In flame-retardant and glass-fiber-reinforced grades, PBT holds specific advantages over polyamides (PA): it often provides better cost-effectiveness, higher flow for filling complex molds, faster molding cycle times, and lower overall processing costs. Its consistent electrical properties, superior dimensional stability (due to low moisture uptake), excellent color and thermal stability under heat, high flame resistivity, and superior surface gloss make it a preferred choice for many electrical/electronic and automotive components.
